I have the honour to transmit for your

consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Director

of Public Works dated the 24th. ultimo, requesting that sup-

plementary votes should be taken to the amount of $22,750 in

aid of Public Works Recurrent and of $22,166 in aid of Public

Works Extraordinary, together with a copy of Mr. Chathan's

minute of the 2nd. instant in further explanation of some of

the items, included in these sume.

The Colonial Treasurer reports that the

items for which votes are asked were all paid before the end

of last year, and the year having expired it is now too late

to take any vote. The only course open to me, therefore, is

to legalize this expenditure in the Supplementary Appropriation

Ordinance for the current year, and this, with your approval,

I propose to do.

3.

I greatly regret this irregularity which

is due to the late date at which the Director of Public Works

reported the excess expenditure. Mr. Chatham states that he

drew up his statement as soon as he had ascertained the

balances available on the votes and the total amount of the
